Supermarkets - Who Pays?

Bill is currently supporting a campaign based on ActionAid's report "Who Pays? How British supermarkets are keeping women workers in poverty". The report looks at the impact that the supermarket price wars have had on the developing countries who supply them with products, and calls for supermarkets to publicly commit to international workers' rights and fairer buying practices. To find out more about the report visit the Action Aid website.

Bill has produced his own video for the campaign which you can watch here, with an opportunity for you to sign up at the end. You can even make your own campaign video using Bill's narration and prove to the big supermarkets that you really ain't gonna be their bitch.

Jacqui Banks:

I currently work in a rather large supermarket chain, just as a lowly cashier, and I want the place to be a bit fairer, but the problem is that I'm just one person and the actual supermarket doesn't care all that much in my opinion. I wholeheartedly support this campaign.

I asked why we don't have Fairtrade milk and they (fairtrade) said it's because we have a benefits system in the UK to support poorly paid farmers.

I think we should push for fair share farming. This would be where profits must be fairly shared between the sellers and growers.

Dave:

You should all go to Farmers' Markets. They do them here in Australia and they essentially cut out the middle man between farmer and consumer. Plus all the produce is regional which is cool. I'm not sure produce works quite the same way in the UK but this has been the only way I can start cutting corporations out of supplying the food i need to live bar growing everything myself. Once you get produce straight from the farm, you'll never buy fresh stuff from large supermarkets or have to put up with their sketchy practices. Easy to say in Australia where most produce can be grown all year round... But at least its a start.
